Whether you're young, young at heart or somewhere in between, a Salt Lake County library card is your passport to begin exploring a world of culture, education and entertainment. A library card is provided free of charge to any Salt Lake County resident who wishes to borrow library materials, and can be obtained at any of the 18 branches. Individual applicants may apply for a library card in person or preregister online. Only one card is allowed per individual. |
Who can get a library card?
Library cards are issued to any individual regardless of age. Library cards are non-transferable and may only be used by the person named on the card holder's account. Minors, under the ages of 18, may obtain a library card by visiting any county library location with a parent or guardian.
Can out-of-county residents get a card?
Yes, residents outside of Salt Lake County may purchase a card by paying an $80.00 annual fee or $40.00 for six months.
What is preregistration?
Preregistration is a temporary record that allows you to quickly receive your permanent library card when you next visit the library.
How do I get a permanent card?
Go to any library location and present a current government issued picture ID with address. If the ID does not contain a current address, it will be accepted along with one of the following current items: lease agreement, deed or mortgage, utility bill, pay check stub or car registration.
What can I do with a permanent card?
A permanent card will allow you access to nearly two million items, including printed materials, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, eBooks, eAudiobooks and interlibrary loans, as well as free Internet and wireless access.
How much does the card cost?
Cards are free to residents of Salt Lake County. Replacement cards are $1.00. Card holders are responsible for all fees, fines or damaged items.
How many items can I check out at one time?
Thirty (30) items may be borrowed at one time on a card. New card holders are limited to five (5) items for the first month.
