YF Billingsley
Briony is a twin and has strong reasons to believe she is a witch. After all, bad things happen whenever she lets her emotions get the best of her. That's what happened to her sister, Rose. And her stepmother. But everything is thrown into chaos and many things are put to light when a young man with a lion's smile and a delightful laugh comes to Swampsea. You quickly discover very little is as it seems. This was a wonderful read with a wholly unique setting (a swamp - so cool). I really enjoyed the fact that Briony is not a perfect little heroine. She has many faults, but they only serve to make her realistic, complex, and three-dimensional. Plus, I love that fact that she wants to learn how to box. Eldric is a fantastic love interest and a refreshing change from the brooding types filling so many YA stories today. Unique and absorbing, this is a great story all around.

Samurai Shortstop by Alan Gratz

YF Gratz
This is a powerful story that blends many different elements in an intricate and extraordinary way. Sixteen-year-old Toyo isn't afraid to prove himself in his new school. More than anything he wants to be on his school's baseball team, but he is troubled by his uncle's recent suicide, a supposedly "heroic" defiant death when the emperor announced there would be no more samurai. Even more, he is worried his father is next, and that it is the only reason he is teaching him bushido - the way of a samurai. As he learns more about his ancient culture it affects him in ways he never expected, even changing how he plays baseball. But as the gulf between them grows, Toyo searches desperately for a way to prove there is a place for his family's samurai values in a modern and changing Japan. Baseball just might be the answer, but will his father ever accept a "Western" game that stands for everything he despises? This is an incredible story on almost every level, and from the first sentence it does not let you go.
